Over the past 25 years, more than nurse scientists have graduated from our Doctor of Philosophy PhD in Nursing program, and have gone on to careers in nursing education, research and organizational leadership in the United States and abroad. The goal of our PhD in Nursing program — the first completely online PhD program in the country — is to engage you in an intensive, rigorous manner that prepares you to be a nurse scholar.

Applied research courses in qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies will prepare you to function as an independent researcher upon graduation.

The program begins in May with the start of the summer semester. We offer three-year and four-year curriculum options, as well as a DNP to PhD program, which permits nurses with a DNP degree to gain valuable skills that will enable them to function as independent researchers. All options are offered online with residency requirements at our Pittsburgh, PA, campus, as well as at Duquesne's Dublin, Ireland, campus as part of one study abroad experience.

Every student admitted to the PhD program is required to come to the Pittsburgh, PA, campus for the first residency, usually held during the second or third week of May. This week includes an orientation to the PhD program and provides an opportunity for students to meet faculty and participate in live classes for the courses in which they are enrolled that summer.

Students enrolled in GPNG Methods of Scientific Inquiry II will take part of the course as a study abroad experience approximately days in locations such as Dublin, Ireland, where students will have housing at the Duquesne University Ireland campus. This residency provides an opportunity for the student to meet with their faculty mentor either at Duquesne University or another location, such as a conference setting, for intensive discussion and writing around dissertation topic development in preparation for approval.

Each student must write and defend a dissertation on a topic of their choosing, and you can view a list of recently defended dissertation topics for ideas. As part of the PhD curriculum , you will be required to make a proposal defense and a final defense.

The Final Defense is an oral defense of the completed dissertation. Students make one public oral defense. Students in the BSN-DNP can complete their first year of study online and the second and third years through a hybrid format. Nurses who wish to pursue a terminal degree in nursing may enroll in a Doctor of Nursing Practice at Northern Arizona University that can be completed entirely online. This degree focuses on enhancing nursing in rural and underserved populations.

Admission criteria for this program includes a master's degree in nursing, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3. There may also be a required interview with a faculty member.

To receive a Doctor of Nursing Practice at Northern Arizona University, students must complete 74 to 79 credit hours and 1, hours of clinical practice. Once they graduate, students will be well-versed in clinical practice and prevention, critical reasoning and leadership. They can earn their degree in 4 years of full-time study or 5 years of part-time study.

Regardless of which track they choose, students in the Post-Master's DNP program can graduate in 2 years of full-time study or 3 years of part-time study. All students will be required to work with a faculty adviser to complete a final scholarly project that focuses on a topic such as translational research or program development. This degree is for advanced practice nurses such as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists and nurse anesthetists.

To enroll, students must have a master's degree. Although the majority of this credit-hour program can be completed online, students will be required to visit the Old Dominion University campus in Norfolk, Virginia, once a semester to participate in a weekend of academic advising and various experiential activities.

Students who graduate with a Doctor of Nursing can own businesses, design programs to improve the quality of health care, perform evidence-based research and develop interdisciplinary teams. Nurses with a master's degree in advanced practice nursing or a bachelor's of science in nursing and a master's degree relevant to their advanced practice position are eligible for this program.

Prospective students must also hold a current RN license and complete a graduate-level statistics course with a B or better within a 6 year period.

Although most of this program can be completed online, students will be required to attend 2 in-person immersion experiences for 3 days each August.
